Innominate integrates Tellitec technology to deliver secure and accelerated VPN solution for satellite, terrestrial and wireless networks.
Berlin, 31 January 2006 - Innominate Security Technologies AG launches its new security appliance mGuard pep with integrated TelliNet TCP performance enhancement. The mGuard pep provides high performance firewall and VPN functionality for secure communication via satellite links and wireless public networks. This makes it ideal for delivering economically feasible TCP based services such as Internet access with a transmission performance comparable to terrestrial broadband connections as well as a high level of security.
On high latency links like satellite or wireless, TCP based transmissions, including HTTP and FTP, normally slow down considerably because the TCP control mechanisms are optimised for low latency terrestrial connections. They interpret the delay caused by the long distance that data has to travel to a satellite and back, as network congestion and, consequently, reduce send rates to avoid congestion. Performance enhancement mechanisms have to be applied on the connections to ensure that the traffic is not slowed down and the end user experience remains good.
For the development and marketing of the mGuard pep, Innominate has established a partnership with Tellitec Communications bvba, a Belgium based provider of leading-edge software for satellite, cable and wireless services. Tellitec's performance enhancing proxy (PEP) TelliNet is now an integral part of the mGuard pep. The TelliNet PEP consists of a server and a client component with the high latency broadband link in between. While the TelliNet Server is located at the teleport of the service provider or at headquarters, end consumers can purchase an easy to install mGuard pep unit to gain access to the service. There is no need for the end user to install software or configure web browsers or other applications to use a proxy. Traffic between the TelliNet server and the mGuard is optimised for high latency networks and even includes HTTP Prefetching to allow download speeds for web surfing equalling terrestrial DSL.
In addition mGuard pep provides high performance firewall and VPN functionality for secure communication via satellite links and public networks. Through Innominate's patented Stealth Mode, mGuard devices are easy to install - without technical knowledge. And as power is supplied via the USB interface, mGuard pep does not require a separate power socket making it well suited for both static local networks and mobile notebook applications.

TelliNet includes on the fly compression and packet aggregation mechanisms to reduce the traffic both on the forward and the return channel. Reduction of load on the backchannel also adds scalability to the services: a high number of customers can be served without experiencing waiting times.

With the new mGuard pep, setting up new services becomes extremely easy for service providers using networks such as DVB-RCS, Inmarsat BGAN, Thuraya DSL, VSAT, WiMAX, GPRS/EDGE or UMTS. But also some terrestrial based WAN applications can cause high latencies and can be speeded up using the mGuard pep.
