Innominate presents the mGuard Tele Service – secure remote maintenance via Internet

Hannover, 24 April 2006 - For the first time, at the 2006 Hannover Messe, the Berlin-based security specialist Innominate Security Technologies AG will present its innovative solution mGuard Tele Service, which is designed for the secure remote maintenance of machines and production facilities. The mGuard Tele Service is based on the reliable mGuard security appliance technology, allowing remote maintenance via Internet, a procedure which is both technically efficient and cost-effective. In particular, heterogeneous plants can be easily and securely serviced with the Innominate solution.

The new remote maintenance solution is Innominate’s answer to the continuing outsourcing trend in industrial plants. The number of companies outsourcing their maintenance procedures by hiring external service providers for the configuration and servicing of machines and processing plants is increasing regularly. In this regard, the mGuard Tele Service offers an enormous potential for cost savings. Costly local maintenance procedures can be drastically reduced by remotely carrying out the failure analysis and essential configuration work, as well as complex patch implementations. Generally, industrial enterprises also operate plants and machines made by different manufacturers. For the first time ever, the mGuard technology allows companies to implement a uniform multi-vendor service platform for remote maintenance procedures, conducted efficiently via the Internet.

"Manufacturers of machines and industrial production lines obtain decisive competitive advantages by using the mGuard technology", says Torsten Rössel, Business Development Manager at Innominate. "For the first time ever, they can offer a uniform solution which is easy to implement, enabling them to link their systems to their Tele Service Center via the Internet. This comes with proven security and at a clear cost advantage over standard modem-based connections. Ease of operation and installation reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) for the IT infrastructure as well as operating costs. Networks supported by mGuard offer high availability levels and guarantee the highest security standards."

Remote Maintenance via a central technician gateway or service portal
If service technicians access the production network via a central technician gateway or service portal, the technician’s laptop is isolated from production networks by the portal. Therefore, the laptop has no direct connection to the machine or system. This procedure prevents any possible disturbances or transmissions of harmful programs to the machines from occurring.

The technician can access the service portal via any Internet connection and is therefore not linked to a specific Ethernet/VPN configuration. The portal provides technicians with a virtual desktop which is customised to the requirements of the machines awaiting maintenance. This also means that the technician is not required to carry additional service tools on his laptop.

mGuard – the technology for standardised Tele Service access
Modern production systems in industrial networks are usually equipped with an IP-compatible network interface. Ethernet connectivity means the configuration and monitoring of production plants is uncomplicated. The following attributes make the mGuard Tele Service an optimal solution:
  • One basic condition for the efficient maintenance of heterogeneous systems at various locations is access via a fast, standardised network. Rising Internet bandwidths make the remote maintenance of all modern machines practical with the mGuard Tele Service, including software and data uploads up to several hundred MB in size.
  • The mGuard Remote Maintenance allows a scalable configuration management for the efficient setup and administration of thousands of security appliances and remote maintenance connections, including remote updates of configuration and firmware.
  • The mGuard Remote Maintenance, conducted via the Internet, replaces the antiquated, unprotected modem dial-up connection, encrypting connections with Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology. This allows data to be transmitted through standard IPsec connections – or optionally tunnelled via the HTTP(S) and proxy server.
Innominate’s mGuard technology enables the platform to function absolutely independently. The self-sufficient security appliances from Innominate can be operated in "Stealth Mode" for the machines or production plant awaiting servicing. Additionally, the mGuard devices can be easily integrated into every multi-vendor environment and are compatible with every system. Moreover, they require no modifications to existing configurations for the production plants, machine systems or the network itself.
